Un mwcalychgate (o anche mwcqcorpse gatecite-ref-church-1-0[1]cite-ref-eccl-2-0[2]) è un tipo particolare di mwegcancello posto all'ingresso dei mwewcimiteri tipicamente mwfainglesicite-ref-church-1-1[1].

Descrizione

Il lychgate consiste sostanzialmente in una struttura a mwiqportico costruita sopra ad un cancellocite-ref-eccl-2-1[2]cite-ref-ency-3-0[3]. La forma più comune di lychgate è quella di un semplice capanno composto da un tetto con due lati a mwkgfrontone, coperto di mwkwtegole o di mwlapaglia per tetticite-ref-ency-3-1[3]. Il tetto è in genere costituito da quattro o sei pali quadrati, disposti a pianta rettangolarecite-ref-village-4-0[4]: i pali in cima si biforcano per sostenere il tetto, solitamente spioventecite-ref-village-4-1[4]. Si possono trovare anche lychgate più insoliti: a mwoqBerrynarbor, nel mwogDevon, ve n'è uno a forma di croce, mentre a Troutbeck, nel mwpaWestmorland, vi sono tre lychgate per un cimitero solo.

Durante i mwpgfunerali, era consuetudine far sostare il feretro col defunto sotto al lychgatecite-ref-church-1-2[1]cite-ref-ency-3-2[3], e la prima parte della cerimonia veniva officiata dal sacerdote sotto ad essocite-ref-eccl-2-2[2]. Fungeva anche da luogo di riposo per i portatori del feretrocite-ref-eccl-2-3[2]cite-ref-village-4-2[4].

La maggioranza dei lychgate venne costruita attorno al mwvaXV secolocite-ref-village-4-3[4], sebbene fossero già presenti nel mwwqVII secolocite-ref-ency-3-3[3]. Pochi degli antichi lychgate sopravvivono al giorno d'oggi, in quanto erano perlopiù realizzati in legnocite-ref-ency-3-4[3]: il più antico attualmente esistente è forse quello della chiesa di San Giorgio di mwygBeckenham. Alcuni lychgate sono stati costruiti appositamente per celebrare l'inizio del mwywIII millennio, come quello di Lenton, nel mwzqLincolnshire.

Etimologia

Il nome deriva dal mwbgmedio inglese mwbwlyche o mwcaleich, "cadavere" (correlato al termine mwcqlich), combinato con mwcggate, "cancello"cite-ref-church-1-3[1]cite-ref-ency-3-5[3].

Varianti di scrittura del nome sono mwfalych gate, mwfqlych-gatecite-ref-ency-3-6[3], mwgglichgate, mwgwlich gate e mwhalich-gatecite-ref-ency-3-7[3].
